SCOS Objectives{Webmaster's note: while the following items are not listed separately as "American values" (in fact, they're not listed separately at all), these foundational values appear throughout the new SCOS and it is my recommendation that students be provided an overview of these ideas at the beginning of the course and then return to them throughout the course and in most assessments}
• Free & Frequent Elections • Equal Justice under the law • Republicanism (indirect democracy consented to by educated voters & executed by virtuous officeholders) • Due process • Rule of Law • Inalienable (aka "natural") Rights • Checks & Balances/Separation of Powers • Federalism • Private property rights • Why the rule of law is an essential component of United States government e.g., the central notion that society is governed according to widely known and accepted rules followed not only by the governed but also by those in authority. (Rule of law) • Ways in which the federal system provides numerous opportunities for citizens to hold their governments accountable. (Structure of government, federalism) • The importance to the individual and society of such personal rights as freedom of expression and thought. (Equal rights under the law, inalienable rights, individual rights) |
